A Nissan Stagea was spotted in a local car spotting group on facebook.
Comments:
Me: Wisconsin plates... not even legal yet. This is why the feds crush gray imports.
Owner: Lol cluesless kids talking shit on stuff they know nothing about.
Me:
Okay, which of the four legal ways did you use to import? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! It’s not 25 years old. Probably not eligible for show and display, which is usually for ultra rare supercars. Did you crash test it? Did you petition Nissan? Just because you have it registered by the local DMV doesn’t mean it’s legal on the federal level. I’ll be genuinely impressed if this is legal.
update:
Owner: Do your research and figure it out. I have all the paperwork i need on my car. But yes it is a fed legal car under those exemptions
Owner: Ps i know far more on importing shit than u think you know by googling so really no need to spout off bs and make claims without knowing anything on a car..
Owner: No you really cant learn everything by googling... Experience is key. Same thing as in the real world. Just because you read a book doesnt make u good at something. I read a book on how to fly planes by i bet your ass if you put me in the pilot seat that plane is gonna crash land lol
Me: Fine. Be secretive about it like the typical owner of a sub 25 year old gray import. There’s a ton of info online, been reading it for years. Nice car either way. I shouldn’t be questioning such a car’s legality anyway, unless it’s (gray imports in general) being sold to unaware buyers with questionable legality. Just don’t want more of them crushed by the feds, which my previous comment is not helping.
Owner: stop reading so much. Call a registered importer and call US customs and department of homeland security. Talk with them and they will guide you. One thing to remember the government wants their money. You get them money and they will get you pretty much whatever you want.
Me: Well that’s interesting. Thanks for the different perspective.

Big guy in the local stance community. Probably owns a shop or something. Still doubt he can afford to crash test it. I don’t get why owners of gray imports act so defensive about how they import their cars and why they’re so secretive about the process. Preserve the value of their car by keeping people ignorant so they don’t import one themselves?

Keep us updated on his reaction when it inevitably gets crushed.

Nice Accord wagon there.

Why are you trying to get it crushed?

Is it RHD too?
![]() 05/03/2015 at 22:28 |

Pretty sure all Stageas came RHD from the factory.

Much lels.
*Imports sub-25 year old car*
*Gets called out for it*
“Nah bruh, you’re just a clueless dumbass who don’t know anything. Regardless of the years worth of research, practice and proof that have gone on. And all the written laws regarding the subject. Idiot.”
*Shakes head*

On the contrary, I am sick of seeing gray imports getting crushed. Too many people are falling prey to shops selling gray imports with questionable legality. That’s why more people should be informed on how to legally import a car.

On one hand, dude’s got a cool car and he found a way to bring it here. If it’s illegal, that’s his problem to deal with and doesn’t affect you.
On the other hand, I’d hate to see this car crushed.

Words of wisdom here. Sometimes even if we know something, it’s better to keep our mouth shut.

I seriously hate the idiots who don’t know jack shit on importing. I actually spent probably a SAT essay length on the legality mporting cars (maybe even longer) just to prove to these dumbasses it’s not a joke on my local car spotters page.

My guess...Imported to Canada. Registered as a maxima or something here. As long as he’s not trying to unload it on an unsuspecting buyer I wouldn’t draw attention to the legality. It’s like calling people out for illegal tint....none of our business.

I believe certifying a car to NHTSA crash safety standards can cost in the millions, so, no, he didn’t put it through a crash test round. Doing so without the backing of an OEM is only viable for especially desirable cars that can be imported and sold in some quantity to recoup the costs.
The laws are very simple and can be understood with like 30 seconds of research, I honestly don’t know how people that are into cars can go through life not knowing them.

The truly correct answer: even the world’s most control freak bureaucrat won’t bother trying to get a minivan crushed.

If he served in Japan and bought this over there then it’s legal. If he didn’t, it’s illegal.

It most certainly is illegaly imported... Registered as something else... No show and display on this one for sure.

Is that true? Have a source for that?

All cars brought over with military stuff are “supposed” to conform. for a while, they simply weren't checking.
![]() 05/04/2015 at 00:57 |

Still needs an HS-7 and an EPA 3501. Still doesn't meet the right part of the HS-7.

I know that feeling. a lot.
![]() 05/04/2015 at 02:49 |

It says it still needs to be a “conforming” vehicle, meaning it still needs to be covered by the same DOT and EPA regulations — or at least that’s how I interpreted that.

I hate people who don't mind their business. I would told PO to get bent and not to worry about my car.
Seriously, why is any body's business?
![]() 05/04/2015 at 09:23 |
|
Probably. Maybe you can import it but you need to have it conform to regulations first. So you can bypass 25 year law but you still need to fix the car to drive it.
![]() 05/04/2015 at 09:42 |

Including crash testing, which is not only no guarantee, but is also extremely expensive. Not sure how it would work getting it to conform to EPA regulations either, but I don’t think it’s as easy as getting it smogged.
Unfortunately not as simple as say, getting a dirt bike certified as street legal.

Their defensive and secretive because its not legal. If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, its probably a duck.

I apologize if I’m repeating myself, military guys have to conform to the same shit bringing cars back that anyone else does. For a while there just wasn’t any checking going on to make sure that the cars conformed.

See this is what happens when you got a person that wants to be the coolest guy on the block with the GTR R34 you want me to tell you that I own a 1972 GTR 2000 and fairlady Z merely 40 year old cars but you don’t see me going secretive about it or tell people they shouldn’t or they don’t know nothing about shipping Vehicles across seas if you want to go get that car go get the car it’s your own fault if something happens to that car
